Summer 2022 | Washington, D.C.

At ABA, we believe that all students should have access to future-forward biotechnology education that can catalyze their academic and professional careers in a rapidly growing field.

We bring this vision to reality though our summer programming: the Biotechnology Summer Intensive and Biotechnology Bootcamps connect students to paid opportunities to further their skillsets in biotechnology. Through our 6-week paid internship in partnership with Washington D.C.’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and Trinity Washington University, scholars explore the genetics of taste through hands-on laboratory experiences led by ABA Teaching Fellow, Dr. Andrew Schuster.

Meet the 2022 ABA Biotechnology Bootcamp
and Biotechnology Summer Intensive cohorts.

“This internship has re-taught me multiple skills involving biotechnology. [ABA Teaching Fellow] Dr. Schuster has educated me on PCR, restriction digest, and gel electrophoresis. These skills can and will help me in my future in biotech.”

— Jeffrey W., ‘22 Biotechnology Summer Intensive Alum

“I feel more confident in my lab technique and my knowledge of taste and how it works…I will use this in medicine by connecting the functions of peoples body that most won't think of, to their illnesses.”

— Jamison F., ‘22 Biotechnology Bootcamp Alumna

“I will use what I learn to utilize my skills and knowledge in a lab during my college career. Additionally, I will use this knowledge as a foundation for my studies in college to ensure I grasp the material. I will also use what I learned to help me in my journey to become a doctor.”

— Goodness O., ‘22 Biotechnology Summer Intensive Alum

We would like to thank our McKinley Tech High School Teaching Fellow, Dr. Andrew Schuster, for leading this year’s cohort through their 6-week course to investigate the genetic implications of the “bitterness” gene. The Trinity Washington University partnerships team and biology department deserves acknowledgment for warmly welcoming ABA scholars to their campus. Our inaugural NASA summer internship would not have been possible without ABA Mentor Dr. Eric Brown de Colstoun, who welcomed an ABA summer intern to his climate change research team. We’d also like to thank the team at OSSE for supporting students through the interview, onboarding, and paid internship opportunity.

And lastly, thanks to the students for their creativity, resilience, hard work, and dedication to continuous learning in biotechnology.
